Artist Statement

Mythologies reflect the societies that create them. I am trying to make explicit one of the mythologies that pervades our culture: that of celebrity. I seek to subvert the myth and its cult-like following by disassembling the low art (fashion magazines, tabloids, pornography) through which we worship celebrity, youth and beauty, and recombining it with animal heads, reminiscent of ancient religious art (e.g., The Sorcerer of the Lascaux cave, Hindu and Egyptian deities, or the Minotaur). My hyper-sexed hybrids are animal and human, beautiful and grotesque. They are symbolic representations of both our cultural obsessions, as well as our desire for myth; the need to connect with something higher than ourselves that we cannot fully comprehend.
